WARNING!!! SPOILERS!!!
If you head south after leaving the Friendly Arm Inn, then Beregost is the first town that you come across and it is a center of activity for the area outside of Baldur's Gate. It is also a great place for your party to rest up, buy and sell items, gather news of what is happening along the Sword Coast and accept quests that allow your game to progress. Below is a list of the quests you can accept or deny, depending upon how you feel at the time.
Upon entering the town, Golin Vend approaches you to offer you directions since you are new in town.
Early Quests
Spider Quest:
If you spoke with Landrin, the gnome at the Friendly Arm Inn, then she asked you to clear her house of a nasty spider infestation. Landrin's house is located in the bottom right-hand corner of the town. Once you have killed off the spiders and collected the body of the largest one for Landrin, you can also pick up her husband’s boots and a bottle of wine for additional experience and gold.
Garrick’s Quest:
Garrick is a bard that can be found in front of the Burning Wizard Inn. If you talk to him, he will offer you a position as a bodyguard for his mistress Silke. If you agree to assist him, your party will follow him to meet Silke and she will increase the offer of gold if you agree to help her against some thugs.
There are two alternatives to this quest. You can turn against Silke and aid the "thugs". If you do this, Garrick offers to join the party. If you side with Silke and help her kill her victims, she will pay you and leave, but you will suffer a reputation decrease and Garrick won’t join the party.
The Bassilus Quest:
If you talk to the town crier, you can discover that there is a bounty on the head of an evil Cleric of Cyric named Bassilus. You can find him in the area southwest of Beregost and if you collect his symbol and return it to Beregost, you can collect the reward.
Firebead’s Quest:
In a house across from the Feldpost Inn you can find Firebead, the mage that cast Protection from Evil on you before you left Candlekeep. He asks that you get him a book entitled ‘The Fateful Coin’, which you can buy at Feldpost Inn. By returning the book to him, you will receive another in return and a reputation increase.
Mirianne:
In a house on the outskirts of the east side of town, there is a young woman named Mirianne who is worried about her husband's messenger not arriving to deliver an important missive. You can find the message for her in the wilderness area south of the town and return it to her to ease her mind and a few extra experience points.
Feldpost Inn:
The party can rest here as well as buy and sell items.
The first time you enter the inn, a man by the name of Marl will accost you verbally. You can kill Marl for a small amount of experience, or you can answer with the options 1, 1, 3, 3, and 1 for substantially more experience.
The Jovial Juggler:
This is another place of rest, and one where you can pick up a few quests.
Bjornin:
In the Jovial Juggler, you can talk to a paladin by the name of Bjornin who has had a nasty run in with a band of Half-Ogres. He wants to go out and kill the band since he is too wounded to do so himself.
Gurke:
Also in the Jovial Juggler, you will find a dwarf who is running around telling anyone who will listen about having his cloak stolen by a group of Tasloi in the Cloakwood Forest. It will take a while to get to this quest because the forest is not immediately available.
Thunder Hammer Smithy:
You can come here to buy an assortment of regular and magical equipment. Additionally, if you engage in Ankheg culling later in the game, you can return to the smithy to have the shell transformed into an exceptionally light, yet strong suit of plate mail.
Kagain:
A dwarf fighter by the name of Kagain can be found in a house next to, (actually above), the Feldpost Inn. He was charged with protecting a caravan in which Duke Entar's son was traveling. Kagain offers you the opportunity to accompany him to find the Duke's son, but once you reach the crossroads, he changes his mind and decides to join your party.
Later Quests
Feldpost Inn:
After you clear out the Nashkel Mines, you can return to the inn and you will be able to accept additional quests that were not available on your first arrival.
Tranzig:
You will find this wizard on the second floor. If you kill him, you can obtain the location of the Bandit's Camp and your map will be updated. Additionally, it should be noted that this is the mage that petrified the Cleric of Tempus, Branwen, who can be found at the Carnival, north of the mines.
Officer Vai:
When you return to the town after clearing the mines, a child will come running to you and tell you that Officer Vai is in the Jovial Juggler and is waiting to speak with you upon your return. Vai asks you to clear the area of the bandits that have overrun it and offers to pay 50 gold pieces per bandit scalp. She will also buy Wyvern heads for 1000 gold pieces each. Once you have cleaned the Bandits Camp, return to her for +1 Reputation.
