Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn takes place a short time after the events of Baldur's Gate. After defeating Sarevok and adverting the war between Baldur's Gate and Amn, the Bhaalspawn player briefly stays in the city's ducal palace, as the guest of honor.

However, rumors of the PC's heritage linkage to Bhaal, the old lord of murder, and their half-brother Sarevok, begin to become ever increasing. Although it can be assumed that the player left Baldur's Gate under these pretenses, it could not be further from the truth.

"They came as you rested; figures cloaked in mist, that clouded your thoughts. Blurring the line between conciousness and dreaming."

"There was no malice. No hatred. Only quick capture. And the promise of grim deeds to come."

It was during this time, that the player's sister Imoen, had undertaken training in the magical arts, and many of your former companions such as Jaheira and Minsc were pursuing their own agendas. But nothing could have prepared them for what would happen next.

The player is somehow captured, and left with a floating amnesia as he/she wakes up in a tiny cage in Irenicus's captivity. The mage talks of 'potential' and hints there is "much untapped power".

Irenicus tried to continue his experiments, until an attack by the Shadow Thieves causes his golem to alert him, and he heads off, to what was only meant to be a "small delay".

Imeon uses this opportunity, to break free the player from their cage, and from there, the player may choose to free Minsc and Jaheira if they so wish.

Much of the player's old equipment has been confiscated. And if the game is not imported from BG1, sold.

There is one exception to this, one of the genies Irenicus holds prisoner in a pocket plane his dungeon is linked to, is the former blade of Sarevok's: the Sword of Chaos.

The player must navigate through the dungeon, gaining some insightful clues as to who is behind this, and why. It becomes apparant, that the player's heritage is the main reason behind this, and the deaths of Dynaheir and Khalid were also used to torment Imeon. But why?

As the player escapes the dungeon, they will come to the realisation Irenicus is a foe of no small talent. Unlike Sarevok who excelled at martial strength, Irenicus's ability in the arcane makes him twice as dangerous, and the laws of the Cowled Wizards make it no easier as Imoen is detained along with Irenicus. An obvious mistake.

The player is shortly thereafter accosted by Gaelan Bayle, who offers the PC a deal to helping find Imoen with some 'friends' of his assistance. The PC isn't forced to agree to provide Gaelan the money, as another offer is soon thereafter raised, by the opposing guild.

While neither side is particularly trustworthy. The player must decide between them, which is the lesser evil, and is more likely to not betray them or leave them at a disadvantage later on.

Finding Irenicus and Imoen, is the primary concern...

But not forever, finding them will be the easy part. Dealing with what comes after, will be much harder.
