The Spine of the World is in conflict; The Ten Towns are under siege by overwhelming hordes of goblins, orcs and various other creatures, bearing the banner of the Chimera.
Ulbrec Dinnsmore, the mayor of the town of Targos, the second largest of the Ten Towns, urged the council to send a messenger to the port cities of Luskan and Neverwinter for aid.
The pledge for aid was heard in Neverwinter, and forces were gathering to aid the north; but as for Luskan, the captains of Luskan saw little need for sending assistance, but were fearful of reprecussions. Therefore, a simple plan was devised, to lure mercenaries and thugs alike within Luskan, to board ships bound for the Ten Towns, first to Bremen and Targos.
Intially, all seemed well, but once the ships neared the Spine of the World, the Legion of the Chimera spared no effort to destroy as many ships as possible. Heavy casualties ensued, and only a few ships survived the attack from goblins and orcs, to make it to Targos as Bremen burned.
It was into the port of Targos, that unlikely mercanaries entered the conflict; in the middle of a sneak attack on Targos's port. Captain Hendron ferried the PC's party from Luskan on board his ship, the Wicked Wench. No sooner were players to step off the ship, did the sights of combat become apparant.
The motives behind the Legion of the Chimera's attacks are largely unknown by the player for a long time, even the name is hidden until the mage Xuki utters it in an attempt of negotiation.
What is clear however, is that should the player's party fall in action. Targos, and all the remaining towns of the north, will surely fall.
