Phaere Despana, first daughter of Matron Mother Ardulace Despena, in Ust Natha. She is highly ambitious, and not above resorting to devious tactics to have her way. She is cold-hearted and arrogant, and she hates the drow male Solaufein above else, since he reminds her of her "failures".
It wasn't always this way, however. She and Solaufein once loved each other in, according to Matron Mother Ardulace, a very un-drow way. As a result, both were punished, Phaere to a greater extent; the tentacle rods of Lloth stripped her of her love for Solaufein, and in the end, all that was left of the person she once was, was her ambition.
Now, ambition for power is all that drives her, and while she does show signs of her previous relationship, she discards these 'old feelings' with such remarks as: "All love is foolish."
The player, under the guise of Veldrin, will work for Phaere to further his/her position in the city while in the pursuit of the silver dragon eggs. If male, Veldrin will find himself attracting the interest of Phaere, and this can be furthered on early on by choices of words... but the minute it climaxes after a certain event during the PC's stay in Ust Natha is when the PC must make a moral choice... especially if in a romance with a fellow party member.
The results of this 'encounter' vary appropriately. Phaere is eager to seize control of the city and her house, she wants to be the one leading the assault on the darthiir, and has been biding her time, which is where Veldrin fits into the chain of things.
She is first encountered a prize prisoner of the Illithid. Solaufein and "Veldrin" are sent by a handmaiden of Lloth under Ardulace's order to terminate the Illithid guards, and free Phaere - obviously, though, it's not out of the good of the Matron's heart, which reminds the PC to exercise utter caution when dealing with Phaere. The slightest mistep might destroy the cover story, and the disguise will be revealed.
